If you’re wondering how your neighborhood voted in the November 2018 election and want to see hard numbers in San Antonio, the wait is over.

Every voter is assigned to a voting precinct. And after every election, the Bexar County Elections Department releases voting results for every precinct in the county.

When you plug those numbers into a map, you get to see a detailed, neighborhood-level view of how each race was decided.

For the November 2018 election, I was wondering how these precinct maps would look for the contentious city charter amendments pushed by the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association. It turns out one of the most striking maps is for Proposition B.

It’s one thing to know that nearly 60 percent of voters wanted to cap the salary and tenure of future San Antonio city managers. It’s another thing to see those results on a map. Here’s an interactive version — you can zoom in and click on a precinct to see the vote tally:

A majority of voters in almost every San Antonio voting precinct, from the wealthiest to the poorest areas of the city, supported Proposition B. The measure was widely viewed as a rebuke of City Manager Sheryl Sculley, who makes a base salary of $475,000 with a potential bonus of up to $100,000.

Voters on the outer edges and North Side of San Antonio tend to lean conservative, and more progressive voters live in the other parts of San Antonio, such as neighborhoods inside Loop 410.

Clearly the firefighter union’s proposal had resonated.

“There’s rarely an issue where all four sides of town unite,” said Michelle Tremillo, executive director of the Texas Organizing Project.

Every registered voter in Texas lives in a voting precinct — a distinct neighborhood or geographic area. Election results for each precinct are available to the public, which means you can plug those numbers into a spreadsheet, add some formulas, and create nifty interactive maps that show which candidate won each precinct.

I made these maps in Google Fusion Tables. Zoom in on your neighborhood, click on your precinct, and see who the voters in your area supported.

After last week’s election, we focused on maps of Medina’s race and a few others. Winners of each election carried the teal-colored precincts:

Medina told me on Election Day that much of the Democratic turnout was driven by new voters, many of whom were unhappy with the presidency of Donald Trump.

But as my story with political writer Jasper Scherer noted, some of Medina’s critics complained that Medina himself was guilty of sounding like Trump in his own campaign rhetoric. Alcantara said she heard that complaint from Democrats.

“Our constituents wanted change,” she said. “I believe they could see through all of the rhetoric that was going on. I think they used this opportunity to have their voices heard.”

But where are all these newcomers moving to within Bexar County?

Kelly Guckian, database manager for the San Antonio Express-News, pulled together more detailed population figures from the 2010 Census to help show where Bexar County is gaining residents — and where it’s losing them.

Kelly focused on census tracts, which are geographic boundaries set by the Census Bureau that encompass, on average, about 4,000 people. This allowed her to zoom in on population changes at the neighborhood level. She did the tedious work of compiling and mapping the data, and I helped export it into this interactive Google map that shows how the far West and North sides of the county saw explosive gains in the blue areas, while many inner city neighborhoods in the yellow areas lost residents.

Kelly and graphic artist Mark Blackwell also produced maps showing the population trends broken down by race and ethnicity, and MySA’s Mike Howell put it all together in an interesting package online.

The explosive growth on the county’s outskirts occurred during a decade when city officials emphasized the importance of living near downtown and limiting urban sprawl. Our news story about the Census numbers explored why many people either didn’t hear the city’s message — or ignored it.

I plugged in the city’s data for incidents that occurred between 2000 and 2006 in the area in and around the Dominion. The red dots show incidents in which firefighters exceeded a national response standard of five minutes. The clock starts when they’re dispatched to the emergency, and it ends when the first unit arrives at the scene.

Clearly, firefighters aren’t making many fires in time. This was a problem we found in many outlying neighborhoods, where fire stations are more spread out, and a labyrinth of winding, cul-de-sac streets slow down firefighters.

What’s also interesting about this map is how few fires strike the Dominion, which raises questions about where the Fire Department should marshal its assets and best protect its residents.
