Every time you learn about a new resource, write it down in your own web page or document. If it\u2019s an online resource, link to it. Organize your checklists by topics, such as &#8220;People Finders&#8221; and &#8220;Backgrounding.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Refer to your checklists when you\u2019re working on a story. Add new tools that work. Get rid of the ones that don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>You can use your checklist throughout your career. It will help you remember techniques you haven\u2019t used in years but might suddenly be valuable for the story you\u2019re currently working on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a id=\"C1\"><\/a>Web Searches and Strategies<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Find public data with Wolfram|Alpha\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wolframalpha.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wolfram|Alpha<\/a>: Type your search query, and Wolfram|Alpha finds public data about it and presents the information in an easy-to-digest format. Also check Amazon&#8217;s book search.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Google Groups\" href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/forum\/?fromgroups#!overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Groups<\/a>: to follow specific topics.<\/li>\n<li>For video: <a title=\"Google Video Search\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/videohp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video.google.com<\/a> for everything, not just YouTube.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Google Image Search\" href=\"https:\/\/images.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Image search<\/a>: You can plug a picture into Google&#8217;s image search and it will search for similar pictures.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Twitter search\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search-advanced?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter search<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Whois searches for the owner of a specific web domain: <a href=\"https:\/\/whois.domaintools.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Domain Tools<\/a>, <a title=\"Internic\" href=\"https:\/\/www.internic.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Internic<\/a> and <a title=\"Network Solutions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.networksolutions.com\/whois\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Network Solutions<\/a> are some options.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid malware: Paste the URL of a questionable website into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.virustotal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VirusTotal<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phishtank.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PhishTank<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Web strategies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tell Google to search before or after certain dates by typing before:[date] OR after:[date]. Good way to deal with a flood of information after a major news event. Can also type specific dates: &#8220;before:YYYY-MM-DD and after:YYYY-MM-DD.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Internet archive\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Internet archive<\/a>: The Wayback Machine let&#8217;s you plug the url of a website or a page to see older versions of it. Also try Google&#8217;s cache feature.<\/li>\n<li>If you need a photo that is no longer up, right click on square, save url, and paste url into the Wayback Machine. Old picture should come up.<\/li>\n<li>The holy grail of forgotten pages is \u201cindex of.\u201d Do a google search for that on a site to find it.<\/li>\n<li>Web forms: Use %% or ** in a search box to pull up everything.<\/li>\n<li>It is possible to find pages that an agency doesn\u2019t want spiders to crawl. Type in the web site home page \/robots.txt. It shows internal pages that they don\u2019t want Google to find.<\/li>\n<li>Fun searches: Type <strong>mashup [issue of interest]<\/strong> to see what kind of data crunching previous journalists have done.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>filetype:kml [issue of interest]<\/strong> for interactive maps.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Plug in keywords, get a Google alerts\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/alerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google alert<\/a>: Set one up whenever a new story comes up.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor specific web pages and get an email alert if they&#8217;re altered from <a title=\"Monitor web pages and see if they're altered.\" href=\"https:\/\/visualping.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Visual Ping<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Google Search Tips\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johntedesco.net\/blog\/2012\/06\/21\/how-to-solve-impossible-problems-daniel-russells-awesome-google-search-techniques\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google search tips<\/a> from Dan Russell, a research scientist at Google:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>intext:[keyword]<\/strong> Sometimes Google drops keywords from your results. <strong>Intext:[keyword]<\/strong> forces Google to include that word or phrase.<\/li>\n<li><strong>inurl:[keyword]<\/strong> Search result must have that word in the url of the page. Good for finding content under subdirectories of a website.<\/li>\n<li><strong>intitle:[keyword]<\/strong> Search result will have that word in the title of the page.<\/li>\n<li><strong>[keyword] AROUND(number) [keyword]<\/strong>: Useful for finding words near each other on a web page. Typing <strong>John Tedesco AROUND(3) <a href=\"https:\/\/johntedesco.net\/blog\/tag\/journalism\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"journalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journalism<\/a><\/strong> finds any mention of that mysterious name within three words of the term <a href=\"https:\/\/johntedesco.net\/blog\/tag\/journalism\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"journalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journalism<\/a>. Useful search for terms like &#8220;grand jury&#8221; or &#8220;lawsuit&#8221; near someone&#8217;s name. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/henkvaness\/status\/1508749540429647875?t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Put double quotations<\/a> marks around phrases and single words.<\/li>\n<li>Number range: You can type two periods between numbers and Google will search for that range, such as: <a title=\"Google search query using number ranges\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=1945..1955+war&amp;aq=f&amp;oq=1945..1955+war&amp;aqs=chrome.0.57j0l3j62.821j0&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1945..1955 war<\/a>. Can use within a phrase, and you can use it without the second number to use it to go from a starting point up to infinity. Also seems to work with ..[number].<\/li>\n<li>* for whole-word wildcards: Useful when used in conjunction with quotes to find variations of boilerplate language, such as: &#8220;how * is celebrated in *&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Filetype:<\/strong> Specifics specific file extensions, such as filetype:xls or filetype:doc, for certain types of documents.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Site<\/strong>: For searching within a particular website or domain. <strong>site:gov<\/strong> shows results from government websites. <strong>Site:census.gov<\/strong> shows results from the Census Bureau&#8217;s website.<\/li>\n<li>Typing an asterisk,<strong>*<\/strong>, in a Google Map will pull up all the known locations in the area.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>&#8220;[Name] is&#8221;<\/strong> with other keywords to see what people are saying about a person or company or topic. Another option is adding filetype:pdf or inurl:pdf for documents, and inurl.gov for official sites. <a href=\"https:\/\/gijn.org\/2015\/04\/28\/online-methods-to-investigate-the-who-where-and-when-of-a-person\/?utm_content=buffer8a673&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">More great tips at the Global Investigative Journalism Network<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a id=\"C22\"><\/a>Breaking News<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Find old web pages\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">archive.ph<\/a>: Find webpages and social media posts that get taken down after a controversy or breaking news story erupts. Or save links to pages that might get changed or taken down in the future.<\/li>\n<li>Check Facebook pages and Twitter feeds of the government agencies that responded to the emergency. Look for written updates and any livestream videos of news conferences. Save a copy of those videos or record them. Local TV stations often carry livestreams of press conferences, too. In the early days of a breaking story, these social media posts are often the only official source of details about what happened. Save all this material with screen grabs or other tools such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/web\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wayback Machine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">archive.ph<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/single-file\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SingleFile<\/a> in case it&#8217;s changed or disappers. Transcription tools such as <a href=\"https:\/\/otter.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Otter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/journaliststudio.google.com\/pinpoint\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Pinpoint<\/a> can be used to create a fairly accurate and searchable transcript of long recordings of news conferences. This saves you time so you don&#8217;t have to transcribe the comments yourself, and gives you a way to quickly search for keywords when you need to check something officials said.<\/li>\n<li>If a person, company or other entity is suddenly all over the news, you can tell Google to search before certain dates by typing before:[date]. This is a good way to deal with the flood of information after a major news event. Example: &#8220;before:YYYY-MM-DD.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/newpipe.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NewPipe<\/a>: A free, open-source Android app available on <a href=\"https:\/\/f-droid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">F-Droid<\/a> that lets you easily download YouTube videos on your phone. This way, you can save videos about news events that might be taken down later.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Twitter search\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search-advanced\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advanced Twitter search<\/a> to conduct narrow, focused searches.<\/li>\n<li>Listen to <a title=\"Broadcastify\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadcastify.com\/listen\/?rl=rr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">police and emergency radio scanners online at Broadcastify.com<\/a>. Sign up for a membership to download radio archives.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Situation reports for major disasters\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tdem.texas.gov\/response\/state-operations-center#tab-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daily situation reports<\/a> for major disasters, posted by the Texas Division of Emergency Management.<\/li>\n<li>In San Antonio after a major fire, the San Antonio Fire Department conducts a review of what went right and what went wrong. Those reports are public and can be requested under the Texas Public Informatino Act.<\/li>\n<li>For fires at specific companies: You can try requesting &#8220;Tier II&#8221; hazardous chemical inventory reports that are supposed to be open to the public, but Texas officials have made it <a href=\"https:\/\/foift.org\/2017\/09\/01\/crosby-plant-explosion-highlights-state-efforts-block-access-chemical-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more difficult to obtain them in recent years<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>For emergencies at polluted sites: <a title=\"Right-to-Know Network\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220218182947\/https:\/\/rtk.rjifuture.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Check EPA risk management reports<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>For dilapidated structures, <a title=\"Look up code enforcement complaints\" href=\"https:\/\/webapp9.sanantonio.gov\/codecomplaint\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">check code compliance complaints<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Climate: <a title=\"Climate data\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/climate.php\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Local, historical stats from the National Weather Service<\/a>.
