{"id":6306,"date":"2010-08-09T19:07:28","date_gmt":"2010-08-10T00:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/johntedesco.net\/blog\/2010\/08\/08\/"},"modified":"2017-09-03T22:05:51","modified_gmt":"2017-09-04T03:05:51","slug":"why-do-liberal-socialist-media-elites-spend-so-much-time-uncovering-government-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/johntedesco.net\/blog\/2010\/08\/09\/why-do-liberal-socialist-media-elites-spend-so-much-time-uncovering-government-waste\/","title":{"rendered":"Why do liberal socialist media elites spend so much time uncovering government waste?"},"content":{"rendered":"<link rel=\"image_src\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johntedesco.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/che1.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johntedesco.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/che1.jpg\" alt=\"che\" title=\"che\" width=\"200\" height=\"283\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6324\" \/>Last week, Republican Senators John McCain and Tom Coburn released &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110203073041\/http:\/\/coburn.senate.gov\/public\/\/index.cfm?a=Files.Serve&#038;File_id=a7e82141-1a9e-4eec-b160-6a8e62427efb\">Summertime Blues<\/a>,&#8221; a report listing what they say are the top 100 wasteful stimulus projects across the United States.\n<p>There&#8217;s an interesting pattern buried in the 583 footnotes at the end of the report: More than 200 citations rely on stories published by news organizations. Many of the examples of questionable spending were first made public in news articles &#8212; including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/news\/Red_tape_delays_some_stimulus_projects_97448789.html\">one by yours truly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But wait a second. How is this possible?<\/p>\n<p>I thought reporters are socialists who believe in Big Government. That&#8217;s what the Rush Limbaughs of the world claim. U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas even said <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110914160655\/http:\/\/thinkprogress.org:80\/politics\/2009\/06\/04\/43893\/smith-media-bias-threat\/\">liberal bias in the media is the greatest threat to America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But if they&#8217;re right, why are journalists spending so much time uncovering examples of wasteful government spending, publicizing the details, and holding officials accountable? <\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/johntedesco.net\/blog\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\">Contact a San Antonio journalist<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Think about it. You can pick up a newspaper anywhere in the country and chances are, there&#8217;s a story about some taxpayer-financed boondoggle. And if you&#8217;re not reading it in a newspaper, you&#8217;re probably watching the story on TV, or reading it online in one of the countless investigative Internet sites that are sprouting up.<\/p>\n<p>The journalists I work with are obsessed with this watchdog thing, and it gets annoying after awhile. They totally forget how we&#8217;re supposed to be liberal radicals. A reporter might be talking to me about the nuances of the Texas Public Information Act, and I&#8217;ll be like, &#8220;Dude, I&#8217;m just here for the free Che Guevara T-shirt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Memo to my bosses: I have yet to get my T-shirt, please get on that.<\/p>\n<p>Some people might say the critics who get worked up about liberal media bias conveniently ignore all the investigative stories that poke a gaping hole in their claims. <\/p>\n<p>I, for one, would never say that.
