Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, and Mayor Phil Hardberger announced an effort to fix a city ordinance that was meant to protect San Antonio&#8217;s diminishing tree canopy from urban sprawl. Then a company tied to the owner filed plans to develop the property. The story examined ties between the property owner, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.falconbank.com\/\">Hugo Gutierrez Jr.<\/a>, and mayoral candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/\">Diane Cibrian<\/a>.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>There were several follow up stories:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/johntedesco.net\/blog\/2017\/05\/16\/why-is-state-sen-carlos-uresti-facing-federal-charges-this-news-story-had-the-answers-months-ago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why is state Sen. This news story had the answers months ago<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<li>Mayor Hardberger and Cibrian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/\">pledged to fix<\/a> the tree ordinance.<\/li>\n<li>Columnist Jaime Castillo followed up on rumors that Cibrian had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/\">spent a weekend in Cancun<\/a> at a condo owned by Gutierrez, and had appointed a man with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/\">business ties to Gutierrez<\/a> to the San Antonio Zoning Commission.<\/li>\n<li>After days of questioning, Cibrian acknowledged going to Cancun at the invitation of Gutierrez&#8217;s daughter, who she described as a longtime friend. Reporter Guillermo Garcia <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/\">wrote a story<\/a> about Cibrian amending her financial disclosure form to reflect the trip.<\/li>\n<li>This year, Villarreal filed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.state.tx.us\/tlodocs\/81R\/billtext\/html\/HB02016I.htm\">House Bill 2016<\/a> in an attempt to give San Antonio the legislative authority to close the loophole. Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/\">story about the bill<\/a>, a story about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/\">the news conference and Cibrian&#8217;s absence<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kens5.com\/\">news video<\/a> from KENS 5. Political Editor Scott Stroud <a href=\"https:\/\/mysanantonio.com\/\">blogged about the press conference<\/a>, and Jaime Castillo wrote a column today about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/\">power of the mayor&#8217;s bully pulpit<\/a>.\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Villarreal and Hardberger don&#8217;t think the bill has a very good chance of becoming law at the Texas Legislature, where the real estate industry has a strong lobby. You might ask them, why bother?
